Synovial fluid

Synovial fluid

Synovial fluid, or joint lubricant, is fluid located in the joint capsule. The blood vessels in the joint capsule produce this fluid. Synovial fluid ensures that joint surfaces remain separated from each other, minimizing friction and preventing wear.

Synovial fluid also plays an important role in nourishing the articular cartilage. The production of synovial fluid is stimulated by joint movement. As a result, the joint moves better and (èn) the cartilage is nourished at the same time.

Synovial fluid can be compared to the oily layer in a hinge.
