Treatment methods

Within physical therapy there are many different treatment methods available. All of them are aimed at treating symptoms as well as possible.

Physical therapists are broadly trained and during that training they learn many different ways to treat conditions. Some physical therapists have specialized further and have acquired additional knowledge and skills in this area.

Often, multiple treatment methods are used side by side or alternated during a treatment. Think of a treatment in which taping is done first before exercises are performed. Multiple treatment methods are also used within a course of treatment. For example, after an ACL reconstruction, initial attention is focused on regaining mobility with mobilizations. At a later stage, the emphasis increasingly shifts to active exercise.

The physical therapist discusses with the patient what options there are to promote recovery. Sometimes equipment is used that not every therapist/practice has available. Think of shockwave or myofeedback. This is something to keep in mind when choosing a physical therapy practice.
