Powered wheelchair
For people who cannot walk or have difficulty walking and cannot propel a wheelchair themselves, a powered wheelchair makes a world of difference. It offers the ability to move around both indoors and outdoors despite a physical disability. Powered wheelchairs are especially suitable for people who use a wheelchair permanently.
What does a powered wheelchair look like?
A powered wheelchair looks slightly different from a manual wheelchair. The rear wheels are smaller, and there is an electric motor, battery, and control system. This makes it possible to cover (longer) distances without having to propel the wheelchair yourself.
The frame is usually made of aluminum or steel and has a seat with a backrest and armrests. The footrests are adjustable and can be folded away to make getting in and out easier.
Who is a powered wheelchair suitable for?
A powered wheelchair is suitable for people who are not able to propel a standard wheelchair independently and for people who want to travel long distances without tiring themselves.
A powered wheelchair is also a solution for people with reduced fitness, little (arm) strength, or poor balance and who therefore run the risk of falling. This may be due to illness, a congenital disorder, aging, or an accident. A powered wheelchair gives the user the freedom to travel independently and undertake daily activities without being dependent on others.
Customization options
Powered wheelchairs are available with various accessories, such as headrests, side supports, cup holders, and storage bags. Depending on individual needs, custom adjustments are possible, such as special controls for users with a reduced grip. Control is usually via a joystick on the armrest, but other control options are available, tailored to the user's physical capabilities.
Many models offer adjustable seats and backrests for optimal comfort and ergonomics. In addition, some wheelchairs have different driving modes, with higher speeds for outdoor use and lower speeds for indoors.
Safety is of course an important point when using a powered wheelchair. That is why they are equipped with brakes, both manual and electric, to bring the wheelchair safely to a stop. Some wheelchairs also have a stability system that helps prevent tipping and overturning.
The distance that a powered wheelchair can travel depends on the battery capacity. Some powered wheelchairs offer the possibility to take an extra battery. This is easy to swap when the battery is empty.
