Meaning of the BMI score

Once you know your BMI score, you can use it to determine whether you are underweight, overweight or have obesity. The table below shows how to interpret your BMI score.

Meaning of BMI score BMI score
Underweight 18.5 or less
Healthy weight 18.5 - 25
Overweight 25 - 30
Severe excess weight (obesity) 30 or more

Note: The above interpretation of the BMI score applies to people aged 18 to 70. BMI does not provide a good indication for pregnant women or people with a great deal of muscle mass.

Calculating BMI yourself
