X-ray
An X-ray is often taken to determine whether there is a bone fracture. It is a quick and relatively inexpensive way to examine the hard structures, such as the bones.
How is an X-ray taken?
This imaging technique uses X-rays. These X-rays pass through the body. However, not all tissues allow the radiation to pass through equally. Bones, for example, block more radiation and therefore appear lighter in the image.
Other tissues, such as the air-filled lungs, allow radiation to pass through much more easily, so they appear darker. With proper imaging technique, an X-ray can provide information about bones, fluid, air, the contours of soft tissues, and materials implanted during surgeries, such as prosthetic joints or screws.
The radiation released during an X-ray can damage DNA when the dose is high. The exposure from one or a few X-rays is limited and therefore not immediately dangerous.
Not all tissues in the body are clearly visible on an X-ray. Softer tissues are better seen on an MRI scan, for example. Another drawback is that an X-ray does not show depth and different structures can overlap. An advantage is that taking an X-ray takes little time and the patient does not need to fast.
The results are communicated through the patient’s own doctor, who will also discuss any further treatment.
